At age 8, Bobby underwent an elective tonsillectomy with her brother. Following surgery, she began hemorrhaging in the post-operation room, causing medical staff to panic and rush her back to the operating room. During this emergency, Bobby experienced being outside her body, watching herself being wheeled down the hallway and observing her arm fall off the bed and hit a swinging door, which a nurse then pushed back to her side.
She was pulled from above her body toward an increasingly bright light that felt exciting and playful. Bobby found herself at the top of an arena-like assembly where a choir of angels stood in endless rows. The angels appeared as pillars of energy with thin lines of light defining their forms, lacking human features except for soft O-shaped mouths emitting indescribably beautiful music and eyes that never looked away from the central bright light that was God. A male guide beside her explained she could not sing with them and that the angels never take their eyes off God. The experience was filled with pure love, happiness, and belonging. Bobby awakened vomiting blood that had gone into her stomach during the hemorrhage. Strangely, throughout her life she insisted she knew her paternal grandmother who died before she was born, recognizing her face, mannerisms, and feeling her love, though she has no memory of meeting her during the NDE or otherwise.
