Paul was white water canoeing on the Delaware River when his canoe capsized and wedged between rocks, trapping him underwater with ropes wrapped around his leg. He was submerged for over 3.5 minutes, experiencing initial terror and burning sensations as water trickled down his throat. After accepting his death, a brilliant white light appeared and he felt himself moving toward it, feeling increasingly better and more peaceful. The light had an emotional quality and he felt surrounded by countless benevolent entities though he saw no one directly. He experienced the most profound peace, consciousness, and aliveness he had ever known, feeling ready to inhale water as it felt good. Remembering a utility knife he had impulsively brought, terror returned giving him adrenaline to cut the ropes and surface. He floated exhausted for five minutes afterward. Despite the profound experience, he remains agnostic, uncertain whether it was spiritual or hypoxia-induced.
