On October 10, 2002, during surgery, Paula's throat closed and she couldn't breathe. Coming round from the operation, she heard staff saying "Breathe Paul! Breathe!" but was unable and unwilling to try. Her mind was four feet to the right of her head, still in the OR but no longer part of it. She felt gently pushed from behind with a voice saying "It's your turn," sensing she was at the end of a long line of people. She saw a huge black rectangular doorway as the OR faded. The number 49 (her age) appeared three feet tall, and she laughed saying "Only forty-nine eh? I thought I'd have made it to at least fifty!" Remembering her daughter's upcoming wedding and an award, she was pulled violently back into her body. She experienced pain, heaviness, and a two-day headache, feeling she didn't belong in this grey, heavy, almost dead world compared to her experience.
