Mitchell was in Liberia training for Ebola patient care when struck by a falling coconut from a 50-foot palm tree while at the beach. The impact caused severe spinal injuries including C6 and C7 vertebra fractures. After experiencing intense pain and his body crumpling, he stood above his falling body briefly before plunging into total darkness. In the darkness, he sensed other energy presences floating in the same direction. They came to an old iron gate he had previously seen in dreams months before. Unlike in the dreams where he never entered, this time he walked through the gate into an intense warm white glow. He could feel but not see energy presences of others. A familiar female voice, like a long-lost friend, told him to rest and heal. She then offered him the choice to stay or return, warning that going back wouldn't be easy. Remembering his wife Jackie's request to "come back to me," he chose to return. The voice said simply "just breathe." He awoke looking up through palm fronds at faces, initially unable to move his limbs. His medical colleagues took over his care. Recovery required 6 weeks in a hard cervical collar and ongoing treatment.
