Betty H experienced a profound NDE on December 21, 2012, following a severe asthma attack that led to cardiac arrest. After 15 years of caring for her bedridden, stroke-affected husband while working full-time, she had neglected her asthma symptoms. While taking out trash one night, she struggled to breathe and ran inside for her inhaler but couldn't get any air. She managed to call 911 gasping "I can't breathe" before collapsing. The emergency squad found her unresponsive on the floor still holding the phone. She became combative when intubated in the ambulance and lost all memory from the 911 call until awakening in the hospital the next afternoon.
A doctor informed her she had experienced a traumatic cardiac arrest event. Three days after returning home, while trying to understand what happened, Betty recalled experiencing darkness followed by a jolt. She then saw very bright multi-colored lights, predominantly purples and greens. She heard a clear male voice in her head ask, "Do you want to stay here with Chris (my son who passed 7 years before) or go back to be with Andrea?" She responded in thought, not words, "I have to go back to be with Andrea, she needs me." This brief but powerful experience occurred during her cardiac arrest when she had lost awareness of her body. The vivid lights and the choice presented between staying with her deceased son Chris or returning for her living daughter Andrea represented a classic decision point between life and death. The voice's mention of her son who had died seven years earlier provided profound comfort, confirming he was waiting for her when her time comes. Betty's NDE has brought her incredible peace and eliminated her fear of death. She knows her son is waiting for her, which has special significance for a grieving mother. The experience has helped many others, particularly mothers who have lost children, providing them comfort through her testimony. Since the NDE, Betty has retired, placed her husband in appropriate care, and committed to living a meaningful life for herself and others. She considers the experience a gift that allows her to enjoy life while helping people along the way.
