Bart F experienced an NDE on April 4, 1979, during a severe medical crisis involving extreme food poisoning initially thought to be measles but later determined to be Scarlet Fever. After days without holding food or water, experiencing severe nausea and disorientation, he reached a critical state with a body temperature around 108°F. His mother observed him stop breathing and carried him half a mile to the nearby hospital where doctors immediately iced his body to reduce the dangerous fever.
During this crisis, Bart found himself in a void without any awareness of time. He described it as experiencing NOTHING - no fear, no danger, just the distinct awareness that he was "not in Kansas anymore." In this void state, he became aware that a decision needed to be made about whether he would reach adulthood. Initially, he felt this decision belonged to God, but as he contemplated the possibility of not reaching adulthood, he realized the choice had become his own to make. The experience ended abruptly with "BOOM!" as he heard his mother exclaim "Oh my God, he's not breathing!" He found himself in and out of his body as his mother carried him to the hospital. The extreme fever caused significant physiological damage including hair loss, deep ridges in his nails indicating protein synthesis had ceased, and minor brain damage that affected specific abilities like writing in English cursive, though oddly he retained the ability to write in Arabic. This NDE occurred when Bart was young, during a time when near-death experiences were not widely discussed or known. The experience left him with lasting effects including occasional clairvoyance and peaceful dreams involving deceased relatives. Despite the brain damage and loss of certain abilities, he considers the experience definitively real and transformative. He would later have two additional NDEs from a drug overdose and motorcycle accident, each distinctly different from this first experience.
