Anthony S experienced a profound NDE on November 28, 2007, after suffering both a stroke and heart attack while driving from work. Throughout that day at the Sears Call Center, he had experienced persistent headaches, involuntary sleep episodes, and a red flashing slash over his right eye. While driving to the grocery store after work, the cardiac event caused him to drift into oncoming traffic where he was struck nearly head-on by a large truck. The impact left him hanging partially out of the driver's door by his seatbelt until he managed to release it.
During the emergency response, Anthony found himself outside his body watching an off-duty firefighter drop his taco and run across the street to help him - a detail he later verified months afterward. He observed himself from above lying on the street as sirens approached. His body appeared split between two states: half bathed in white and silvery light, half in the deepest black. He understood intuitively that the black side represented something from which no one could return. A disembodied voice to his left severely criticized how he had lived his life, declaring "GOD doesn't take fence sitters" and commanding him to "Go back and experience the pain you've caused others!" Anthony's heart stopped en route to the hospital, confirming clinical death. He awakened from a coma six days later with congestive heart failure and significant neurological damage affecting his ability to count or recite the alphabet. While in the ICU, he saw attendants who resembled high school classmates caring for him overnight, though staff confirmed no one had been in his room. Despite predictions of lengthy rehabilitation, he walked out of the hospital on Christmas Day 2007. Following his NDE, Anthony experienced mysterious awakenings at exactly 3:16 AM every night from 2009 to 2012. The experience transformed him from uncompassionate to moderately compassionate, teaching him that emotional pain inflicted on others affects them at a cellular level. He now carefully considers his words and actions, particularly with his autistic daughter, leading to dramatically improved family relationships.
