Andrew G experienced a severe cardiac event on August 3, 2014, while driving to get ice cream with his family. He suffered both a stroke and heart attack, with complete right coronary artery blockage and over 90% left-side blockage. After drifting into oncoming traffic and being struck by a truck, he was rescued by an off-duty firefighter. His heart stopped en route to the hospital.
During his cardiac arrest, Andrew found himself standing in a dark, calm cavern on a black marble slab about 6 feet wide that ran into a void. To his right was an 18-foot tall frosted glass wall, backlit from within. He observed two silhouettes cast on this window - a young boy around 8 years old running toward him with arms wide open, laughing with joy, and an adult male figure further along who reached out to comfort the boy and indicated that Andrew wasn't coming with them yet. Andrew felt overwhelming joy upon seeing the boy, with an intense feeling of "Oh my God! I never thought I'd ever see you again!" though he didn't recognize who the child was. He understood he was there just to observe, not to cross over. The veridical aspect of his experience included observing an EMT drop his taco and run across the street to help him, which he later verified. He also had awareness of being partially anesthetized in the emergency room and hearing the flat-line alarm when his heart stopped. He perceived himself from above his body and noted he wasn't breathing and didn't feel the need to breathe. After awakening from a six-day coma, Andrew learned he had congestive heart failure and faced months of physical therapy. Despite initial difficulties including inability to count to ten or recite the alphabet, he made a remarkable recovery and walked out of the hospital on Christmas Day 2007. The experience reduced his fear of death and provided him with a sense that joy exists within him as an accessible resource.
