In summer 1963, Michael crashed at over 90 mph after missing a turn, shearing off an embankment and flying 50 feet into a wheat field. Upon impact, he immediately left his body, observing the accident from 30 feet above while traveling along with it. After observing from above, he returned to his body for the final portion as the car rolled upside down. Despite the severity - the steering wheel bent completely around the post on both sides and the post bent against the dash - Michael walked away without apparent injury. The wrecker driver later insisted the driver must be hospitalized or dead based on the damage. Michael also describes two other experiences: at age 10 during brain tumor surgery in 1952, watching his surgery from above as they tried to restart his heart; and when transporting his infant son's casket in winter, both he and his wife felt warmth on their backs throughout the journey, which left only after the burial. These experiences convinced him of the reality of spirit bodies that animate physical flesh. He felt peaceful, calm, and interested rather than frightened during the NDE.
