On June 9, 2014, Martin was at work when an emergency required immediate response. While running to address the situation, his heart began spinning out of control and breathing became increasingly difficult due to aortic valve failure. Despite lacking oxygen, he completed the emergency task before seeking help. He collapsed, and a colleague found him blue and unresponsive. After a brief period of blackness where time seemed not to exist, Martin felt himself rising as if in an elevator. He emerged from darkness into a wonderful park where everything was extraordinarily beautiful with enhanced colors. Happy people were present but paid no attention to him. He felt no pain, perfect temperature, and no fear - better than ever before. The light was soft and omnipresent. When he wondered what he was doing there, he instantly received multiple answers and remembered reading Dr. Moody's book years earlier, realizing he was having an NDE. Thinking of his young children, he pleaded not to die. He immediately returned to consciousness, cold and tingling, as paramedics arrived. He later underwent open-heart surgery using the Ross method to replace his aortic valve.
