Alex underwent emergency surgery for appendicitis in 1997. During recovery from the operation, she had an extreme allergic reaction to the anesthetic, compounded by an undiagnosed bronchial infection that would have prevented surgery if not for the life-threatening nature of the appendicitis. She was looking down from the ceiling at herself lying on a surgery-type bed with medical staff around her body. Everything appeared very white and bright. One person was trying to wrap a silver blanket over her body and she clearly heard them saying "Breathe, Alex, breathe. Come on, breathe." She then took a breath and was instantly back in her body. She was completely unconscious for several hours afterward with a very slow recovery. Days later, she asked a nurse if she had stopped breathing and the nurse confirmed that indeed she had stopped breathing in the recovery room. No other medical professional mentioned it again, and Alex kept quiet about her experience. Eighteen years later, she can still vividly remember it, especially the whiteness and brightness of the room.
