Laura underwent abdominal surgery under general anesthesia but was not properly operable due to insufficient potassium and anemia. Upon waking, she was constantly vomiting and found herself isolated in her head "like being in a fish bowl," unable to communicate. She had an out-of-body experience where she saw nurses and doctors from above with panicked expressions. She observed the heart monitor and heard staff discussing her as if she were dead, commenting on her appearance and speculating about informing her elderly father. Realizing her life was at risk, she prayed constantly in her "head fishbowl" asking to live and for help from a recently deceased friend. She did not see a tunnel or light, believing her prayers protected her. After waking, medical personnel said they had never seen anything like this. She spent 15 days in intensive care with serious heart problems and subsequently lost all fear of death.
