Witney's family was returning from a double feature at a drive-in theater around midnight. Her father was driving with Witney in the passenger seat, both wearing seatbelts, while her mother and brothers sat in the back of the station wagon. They were struck head-on by a drunk driver who crossed into their lane without stopping. Witney watched the vehicle heading straight toward them in what seemed like slow motion before blacking out from the severe impact.
Upon losing consciousness, Witney immediately forgot everything and found herself in complete, warm, comforting darkness. She felt safe, content, and deeply loved in this space. The experience was very quiet, with a sensation of swimming or floating in a warm, safe cocoon. Nothing hurt, and she felt profound peace. She saw a soft, shimmery light in the distance but didn't feel compelled to go toward it, instead knowing she had to "go back." Witney had no specific veridical observations during the experience, though she maintained awareness in the darkness. The void-like state provided comfort rather than fear, with an overwhelming sense of being loved and protected. She awoke suddenly with eye and facial injuries while being extracted from the wreckage. Adrenaline prevented immediate pain as she heard people discussing her condition and reassuring her. At age 16, she later had another out-of-body experience when hit by a car, floating above the scene and seeing everyone around her body before being pulled back by embarrassment about her exposed underwear and worry about her wrecked bike.
