Following a traumatic rape that led to PTSD-like symptoms, Wendy attempted suicide by taking two bottles of over-the-counter sleeping pills. Her boyfriend found her and rushed her to the hospital. About 30 minutes later, she was found on a gurney in the hallway not breathing with blue lips, clinically dead. The emergency room doctor began aggressive resuscitation efforts, shocking her "over and over and over again" - she recalls 15 to 20 times - while screaming at the medical team not to give up.
During her out-of-body experience, Wendy stood next to the emergency room doctor, trying to tell him she was okay and had never felt better. She wanted him to understand that she understood everything and that this state was much better than life. She watched the repeated defibrillation attempts on her body and observed specific details including a safety pin holding her jeans that "pinged" across the room when it popped. She experienced heightened consciousness and felt like she understood everything with access to universal knowledge. After leaving the emergency room briefly, she encountered a very old man who touched her hand, returning her to her body. Two to three days after awakening on a ventilator with pneumonia, nurses made her walk in the hallway where she saw the doctor who had saved her. She approached and thanked him for saving her life. All the blood drained from his face as they both simultaneously realized they had never met when she was conscious - she had recognized him solely from her out-of-body observations during resuscitation. This provided remarkable veridical evidence of consciousness during clinical death. The experience transformed her from fearful to confident, gave her premonitions about future events including knowledge she would have a daughter (born years later, now 37 and working in heart surgery), and eliminated her fear of death.
