Wendy was recovering from a hysterectomy following childbirth when she began hemorrhaging severely. Multiple attempts to stop the bleeding failed. She rang for a nurse, feeling she was about to pass out, and was told they were bringing a blood transfusion. She felt herself sliding head-first off the end of her bed and falling through a tunnel while hearing nurses calling her name and telling her to breathe.
During her out-of-body experience, Wendy felt completely detached yet fully aware of everything happening in the room. She experienced profound peace and had no thoughts of her loved ones, including her newborn infant. She heard the medical team call for a priest and observed them comforting her crying roommate while escorting her out into the hall. The nurses had trouble starting the blood transfusion because her veins were collapsing. She could process multiple conversations simultaneously with heightened alertness and clarity beyond normal consciousness. The experience included passing through a tunnel at the head of her bed and sensing unusual brightness. Wendy suddenly awakened as the priest was anointing her with oil, which she could smell strongly despite everyone saying it has no odor. The nurses again told her to breathe as she was on oxygen. Her limbs were drawn up like someone in a prolonged coma. She was immediately taken to surgery to repair the hemorrhage source. During surgery, she had a vision of someone dressed in white standing by her operating table, holding her hand lovingly and telling her it was not her time to go, that she had much more to do. She healed quickly, was home in three days, but didn't discuss the experience for years, fearing others would think her crazy.
