Wanda was on a scuba diving trip in very good physical condition, swimming regularly and working a strenuous job. The air temperature was 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and she wore a wetsuit but no booties, mittens, or head covering. After swimming over a mile and diving to over 100 feet in water temperatures in the low 40s, she developed severe hypothermia. Upon surfacing, she lost the ability to use her hands or inflate her vest, telling her diving buddy "Ken, don't leave me" before losing consciousness.
During her near-death experience, Wanda's spirit "submitted completely" and she experienced being within God rather than as a separate entity. She described it as the greatest peace anyone could know, a complete resting within the divine presence. There was no tunnel or visual phenomena, but rather a profound sense of unity with God. She felt completely loved in a way she had never experienced before, with no fear and complete trust. The experience transcended normal consciousness, existing in a timeless state where earthly concerns became irrelevant. Her diving buddy inflated her vest and alerted others, who swam and floated her unconscious body over a mile back to camp. Unable to reach medical facilities 40 miles away, they laid her in the sun covered with bedrolls. Wanda remained unconscious for over two hours with very low but constant breathing before awakening. The experience profoundly changed her spiritual life, eliminating her fear of death and deepening her compassion for others. She only shared the experience with her priest nearly 40 years later, as its influence continued to shape her spiritual and physical existence.
