Walter passed out at home and was taken to the hospital with severe pneumonia. His bodily functions were shutting down and he was "coded," requiring CPR. He was unconscious for five days in the hospital.
During his near-death experience, Walter found himself walking toward an incredibly brilliant light, brighter than anything he had ever seen. As he continued moving toward the light, it seemed to keep moving further away from him. He felt completely calm and peaceful throughout the experience, with no fear or anxiety. He knew with certainty that he wanted to be where the light was located. Walter sensed the presence of his deceased uncle Kenneth during the experience. He was aware that something significant was happening while his body remained unconscious in the hospital bed. The experience felt more vivid and alert than normal consciousness. When Walter awoke five days later in the recovery room, he maintained the peaceful and calm feeling from his experience. The nurses and doctors were surprised when he regained consciousness. He was told he had been "out" for five days, during which time his life had been in serious danger from the pneumonia.
