In May 1996, after three months of exhaustively nursing her dying father with cancer on only 1.5 hours of sleep at a time, Valeria collapsed with critically low blood pressure of 60/20 that the ICU nurse later said should have been fatal. During a band rehearsal, she experienced severe symptoms including dizziness, headache, breathing difficulty, and a squeezing pressure in her head before being rushed to emergency care. As she lay dying, she felt complete peace knowing her life was complete except for not having written a will for her inherited house, then experienced euphoric bliss as her body sank like water draining from a bathtub while losing all physical sensation but maintaining clear awareness. She left her body and observed from above the ambulance, seeing her friends outside in perfect detail - one nervously drinking from a wine and coke bottle, repeatedly approaching the ambulance door and retreating in confusion. Though she saw all this clearly while focusing on her friends' emotions of worry and astonishment, she wasn't aware she had died or that anything was strange, simply accepting it as natural continuation of life. A sharp needle stick in her left arm brought her back to her body, and she spent a night in intensive care followed by two weeks of testing that found only complete exhaustion. It wasn't until two years later when she mentioned to the drinking friend how she had seen him outside the ambulance that she realized the impossibility of seeing him from inside the vehicle and understood she had experienced death. The aftermath brought extraordinary changes: months of spontaneous insights about humanity and Earth flowing into her consciousness each morning, inexplicable knowledge confirmed in books she'd never read, enhanced empathy allowing her to perceive hidden emotions, and ultimately the courage to reject conventional cancer treatment four years later, healing herself naturally and becoming a naturopath.
