On May 22, 1987, Terry was rafting with friends when they encountered a dangerous logjam. As his companions scrambled to safety up the log pile, the raft flipped backward, spilling Terry into the water where he became trapped underwater among the logs. Despite hearing his friends screaming his name and repeatedly attempting to pull himself up against the powerful current, he couldn't escape and realized he was going to die, thinking sadly of his family, especially his little brother. Suddenly, Terry found himself floating vertically around a magnificent cone-shaped light that drew him toward it, experiencing overwhelming peace and joy while time seemed to stand still. His deceased grandmother, who had passed five years earlier, appeared on the shore in her characteristic dress and jewelry, holding hands with a small boy in winter clothing. She firmly commanded him twice to "Stay out of the light," and trusting her completely as someone who had never lied and would want him safe, Terry paddled backward away from the light. The next thing he knew, he had somehow traveled 50-60 yards downstream and was lying on the opposite shore with his friends shaking him back to consciousness. Two years later, while looking through old family photos at his mother's house, Terry discovered the identity of the small boy - it was his grandmother's little brother who had died at age 4 or 5, whom Terry had never known about, causing him to break down in tears at the confirmation.
