In January 1991, Teresa, 21 years old and four months pregnant, experienced a life-threatening event when she fainted from lack of oxygen and struck the back of her head on a concrete step. The impact opened a wound at the base of her skull, and she lost consciousness for approximately 38 minutes. During this time, Teresa felt herself leaving her body through the wound opening, ascending diagonally toward a magnificent light without looking back at her physical form. She experienced profound peace, happiness, and expansion, free from gravity's constraints, while a soft breeze caressed her as she floated toward the light. Multiple joyful voices emanated from the light, repeatedly calling "There comes Tere!" and urgently commanding her not to look back, warning that the darkness behind would cause her to become lost. Among these voices, she clearly recognized her mother's distinct voice, though her mother was alive and 1000 miles away in California at the time. Teresa encountered a massive, majestic floating arch that served as a portal to the light, where she felt beings of light around an unseen table. Her experience ended abruptly with a thunderous sound that returned her to her body without negotiation. The most extraordinary aspect occurred nine years later when her mother was dying of cancer - Teresa telepathically told her dying mother about hearing her voice during the NDE, and her mother responded that she had seen Teresa coming while she was going, confirming a bidirectional spiritual encounter across time.
