At age 16, Madeleine was prescribed powerful, addictive medication for hyperactive bladder and nervousness. Already suffering from deep depression unknown to others, she had previously attempted suicide twice without success. After a quarrel with her parents, she locked herself in her room and took all remaining pills (approximately 7) around 7 PM on a Saturday afternoon.
While lying down, she became dizzy, stood up, then fainted and crashed onto the bedroom floor, unable to break her fall. She observed her face hitting the floor but felt no pain. Simultaneously, she saw herself standing in the same place, watching her body on the floor. She experienced no physical sensations, pain, stress, fear, or anguish - simply observing herself trying to understand why she had fallen so hard without feeling pain. She lost all perception of time while observing herself on the floor. The next memory was waking suddenly 16 hours later at 2 PM Sunday - not like normal waking from sleep but opening her eyes without the feeling of waking from a dream. She was amazed that nobody had realized what she had done during those 16 hours. Her parents only discovered the suicide attempt after noticing the empty pill bottle. The experience profoundly changed her perspective. She understood there was a reason for the experience, that her body was not her real "I," and recognized a bigger purpose for her existence, though not in words but as a sensation. She promised her father never to attempt suicide again. Her spiritual journey evolved from Catholicism through atheism to a current reconciliation with God, conceiving Him completely differently than before. She now understands that a powerful force exists within us beyond human mental understanding.
