In February 1996, while sitting in a veterinary waiting room, Luce suddenly felt ill and called for her friend's help before losing consciousness. She had been suffering from endometriosis for several years and had lost weight with episodes of fainting. Two days after this experience, she was urgently hospitalized due to an ovarian cyst.
Upon losing consciousness, she felt herself falling into a dark spiral filled with howling people whose faces she could perceive but didn't recognize. Their hands were trying to touch her as she continued falling deeper. This terrifying descent continued until she saw a strong light that immediately brought her peace. She moved toward this beautiful light and found herself in a white tunnel. While in the peaceful white tunnel, she heard her name being called repeatedly. The calls seemed to come from elsewhere, not from the tunnel itself. She recognized these were coming from the physical world - specifically from her friend and others at the veterinary office trying to revive her. Torn between the peaceful light and the calling voices, she ultimately decided to return. She felt herself heavily returning to her body, transitioning from feeling very light to heavy again. When she opened her eyes, her head was on her friend's knees, and she was experiencing severe heart pain. The experience profoundly affected her spiritual beliefs - she moved from Catholic faith to atheism but gained belief in protective angels and souls that surround and protect people in daily life. She described the light as soft, warm, and appeasing, consistent with Christian descriptions, but the dark realm with grasping entities troubled her and remains unexplained.
