In June 1985, in a Paris bar during a hot summer afternoon, Laurence experienced his first-ever sudden drop in blood pressure, likely due to heat and beer consumption. While watching a friend play an electronic game, he began losing his five senses one by one - his sight blurred until blindness, and his touch and hearing disappeared. Despite trying to remain upright, he lost consciousness and collapsed.
He found himself submerged in total blackness with 360-degree awareness. He had no body but remained more aware than ever. The realization struck him that this blackness was infinite and timeless, with no beginning or end, and he was submerged in it forever in total solitude. Time as experienced in the body ceased to exist. This understanding triggered an extraordinary flash of fear, panic, and anguish unlike anything he had ever experienced. The terror was so intense that he understood if it continued, he would go insane. At that critical moment, the black immensity of loneliness and timelessness vanished, and he immediately returned to his body. He awoke to a man slapping him while lying on the floor, never having felt the fall or known he had lost consciousness. He felt like embracing the man who had unknowingly rescued him from infinite anguish. For years, he suppressed this experience, never speaking about it and imagining he must be a bad person or damned to have such a negative experience. The experience transformed him from an atheist materialist to a theist who believes life is an opportunity to experiment in temporality and that bodily death is not the death of the spirit. He now follows a spiritual but non-religious path, describing himself as a "Jesuist without religious affiliation."
