In November 1978, Lauren was being pulled on a snow saucer behind a car when she lost control and hit a parked car at approximately 30 mph, impacting the left side of her face. She suffered 5 skull fractures, broke both orbits of her eyes, destroyed her left cheek bone, and broke her jaw in 3 places. The trauma was so severe that the boys who witnessed it thought they had killed her.
Immediately upon impact, Lauren left her body and entered an aura of all white light that was totally warm and peaceful, with pure love emanating through and around her. Her grandfather, who had passed away earlier that year, appeared and embraced her, telling her she had a decision to make about staying or returning. During a question-and-answer period with a voice that was neither male nor female, she learned she would have no lasting damage except a tracheotomy scar if she returned, and that if she stayed, she would "become the Light." The most remarkable aspect was her mother's simultaneous dream where the grandfather appeared saying "Lauren is dead," leading to a spiritual struggle where the mother refused to let her go. Lauren made the conscious decision to return because she knew her mother would grieve deeply. She experienced multiple out-of-body episodes, including watching her own tracheotomy from above her body on the operating table, and looking out the ambulance window at Lake Tahoe. After 9 hours of reconstructive surgery and several days in intensive care, she recovered remarkably quickly, vacationing in Mexico just six weeks later. She was known as a miracle case in the hospital, bringing joy to staff and patients with her positive attitude. The experience led her to embrace spiritual practices, particularly meditation and the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda.
