In March 1994, while driving after little sleep, Lani fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into an open trailer at approximately 70 mph. The SUV flipped and rolled multiple times before sliding into a guard rail. During the accident, she experienced a profound sense of floating and peace, finding herself in a dark, peaceful tunnel despite what must have been tremendous noise from the crash. She was aware of everything happening in the room from multiple viewpoints, as if viewing from above with several eyes.
The experience was characterized by an incredible sense of peace and the absence of time. Everything seemed to be happening simultaneously, and she felt years had passed during the brief period she was unconscious. Her thoughts moved incredibly fast, and her senses became incredibly vivid. She passed through a tunnel and experienced overwhelming feelings of peace, joy, and harmony with the universe. She underwent a life review where many past events came back to her. Upon reaching a boundary or limiting physical structure, she came back to consciousness as her boyfriend screamed her name, realizing the SUV had landed on her hand. Emergency responders used the Jaws of Life to free her. The tow truck driver told her God must have a bigger plan for her as she should have died. Since the accident, she experiences daily physical pain but has developed heightened spiritual awareness and enhanced sensory perception, particularly hearing. She no longer fears death and feels much closer to God through daily prayer, which helps her return to that place of peacefulness she experienced during the NDE.
