In spring 1965, seven-year-old Steven was strangled at a school bus stop by a larger boy who responded violently to being teased. The boy pushed Steven against a tree and blocked his airway until he blacked out and slid down the tree face. During this near-death state, Steven found himself looking down on the entire scene from above for approximately three seconds. He observed himself unconscious against the tree and saw girls pulling the attacker off his body. During this brief out-of-body experience, he had complete 360-degree vision, able to see in all directions simultaneously. He then returned to consciousness gasping for air with a sore throat that lasted several hours. The experience was forgotten for nearly 20 years until reading about someone else's NDE triggered the memory. Since this childhood experience, Steven has had multiple precognitive visions, seeing his life's future events in 3-4 second intervals. The NDE gave him a sense of mental freedom and openness, with thoughts that seemed incredibly fast during the experience. Though brief, the experience left him with enhanced perception abilities and eliminated his childhood fear of death. He now believes definitively in an afterlife and feels a continuing connection to "the other side" that has persisted throughout his life.
