Patricia S suffered a grade five liver laceration in July 1990 and died twice on the operating table, experiencing clinical death under monitored conditions. The medical crisis was severe and life-threatening, requiring immediate surgical intervention.
During her experience, she felt herself coasting toward an extremely wide, bright light, entering what seemed like a well-lit foggy area while simultaneously seeing a field. She was overwhelmed by indescribable love and inner peace. She felt the actual presence of several beings, not just thinking they were there. Her grandfather, who had been deceased for nine years, communicated with her - not through voice but through feeling - saying "I am not going to take you away from your father like I was." No specific veridical observations were reported that could be independently verified. The experience consisted of subjective perceptions of light, presences, and telepathic communication with her deceased grandfather. Following the experience, her life changed forever in positive ways. She now completely believes in a higher power and angels, appreciates love even from strangers, laughs at simple things she never would have before, tells people what they mean to her, and has become more open. When she later tried ecstasy, she saw similar light patterns and angelic glows, which reminded her of her NDE. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The bright divine light and overwhelming love align with biblical descriptions of God's presence. Communication with a deceased relative supports the communion of saints doctrine. The transformative life changes toward love, openness, and appreciation reflect spiritual fruits. The sense of divine presence and belief in angels is thoroughly biblical. Unbiblical elements: None identified. The experience contains standard NDE elements consistent with Christian understanding of consciousness surviving death.
