In October 1967, nine-year-old Steve fell into a 12-foot deep canal while fishing in Stoke on Trent, England. Unable to swim, he thrashed wildly and went under three times, swallowing dirty water and growing extremely weak. On the third submersion, everything went black as he was drowning. Then his panic suddenly transformed into a strong sense of calmness and peace. He was drawn into a very bright white tunnel, moving further up until he saw two large brown closed arched gates like church doors. Standing by the entrance on the left was a figure in a dark-colored monk's cowl whose face was not visible. A comforting woman's voice spoke the words "Go back, it is not your time." He then regained consciousness on the canal side after receiving the kiss of life four times from a factory worker on his first Sunday shift in eight weeks. Steve had been underwater for approximately six minutes, his body lifeless and skin grey. He was rushed to hospital where dirty water and tadpoles were pumped from his stomach and lungs. The experience left him less fearful of death than most people, with a caring and loving nature, though he often wondered why he was sent back and if he was meant to serve some higher purpose. He believes there truly is an afterlife and another place beyond this world.
