On a Friday night in September 1974, Ken was driving with three friends on Route 1 near the Maryland-Pennsylvania border. It was just getting dark on the clear night when they set out, planning to turn around near the state line. As Ken drove uphill on the empty road toward his turnaround point, he collided with another vehicle that he hadn't seen. The impact triggered an immediate and profound out-of-body experience that would remain vivid in his memory for over 40 years.
Ken found himself observing his own body in the car before being drawn through a tunnel toward a brilliant light. In the tunnel, he encountered his deceased father first, followed by other dead relatives, experiencing an overwhelming sense of peace and happiness. His entire life flashed before him as he flew through this tunnel. At the end stood a figure in robes who appeared to be Jesus, centered within a pure white, perfectly round, crisp bright light. This being communicated a simple but powerful message: "Go back, it is not your time yet." The vision was crystal clear with incredibly vivid sensory details that Ken describes as incomparable to normal consciousness. Time lost all meaning - everything flowed together without any sense of duration. The emotional impact was profound, filling him with incredible peace and happiness so intense that he didn't want to leave. The environment he entered was one of pure happiness and peaceful feeling, distinctly otherworldly yet more real than ordinary reality. After receiving the message to return, Ken woke up in his car, sitting there wondering what had just happened. Only after climbing out did he learn from bystanders that he had hit another car. The experience had been so vivid and impactful that 40 years later, Ken still remembers every detail as clearly as when it occurred. Initially skeptical about what happened, he has come to firmly believe in the reality of his experience, particularly as his worldview shifted from atheistic uncertainty to definite belief in God and an afterlife.
