In fall 1996, Kathy was on a trip to Cancun, Mexico with five female friends, seeking stress relief after a difficult divorce. Known for her adventurous spirit, she convinced one friend to join her on a banana boat ride. They found an unofficial operator on the beach who took them far out into surprisingly large, choppy waves. Once they were extremely far from shore, the boat operators inexplicably untied their inflatable banana and left them stranded, waving goodbye and saying "adios" while pretending not to understand English. Before Kathy could fully process their abandonment, her friend screamed a warning as an enormous wave crashed over them.
Kathy found herself drowning in the ocean, swimming desperately while waves repeatedly pushed her under. She could see her friend had made it to shore and was yelling for help, but the beach had mysteriously emptied. Exhausted from fighting the waves, Kathy kept thinking "So this is how I am going to die" - drowning being her lifelong fear. Then a profound peace entered amidst the panic. Under the water, she became the words "peace" and "love," feeling unconditionally loved in a way that transcends earthly description. Her life flashed before her in both images and pure knowing, all time collapsing into a single moment where past, present, and future merged into one. In this transformed state, Kathy experienced a fundamental truth: all people are one, with separation only created by ego. Opening her eyes underwater, she saw clearly - beautiful colors, bright white light, and a knowing all intertwined like fabric. Love wrapped around and through her like waves. Suddenly, two hands grabbed her waist from behind, repeatedly picking her up and throwing her forward until she reached the beach. On the sand, she saw a thin, toned man with long hair and an off-white wrap emerging from the water to her left - the same distinctive figure she had noticed pacing the beach before the boat ride, resembling traditional depictions of Jesus. When Kathy asked her friend to thank the man who saved her, her friend insisted no one had helped - Kathy had emerged from the water alone. The experience initially didn't impact her life significantly as she struggled with her identity and tried to maintain normalcy. Only recently, through life coaching, shamanic journeys, and meditation, has the full impact landed. She now understands the experience showed her that earthly life is meaningful for the growth it provides, and that we teach and learn from each other in every moment.
