During surgery in the summer of 1994, Karin was clinically dead for several minutes, leading to one of the most profound spiritual transformations documented. After entering the operating room, she felt herself swimming upward through a medium heavier than air but lighter than water, where she was met by a magnificent female-type being who scooped her up like an infant. This angelic presence placed Karin in a crystal-like bed, telling her to rest because beings wanted to honor and welcome her.
As beings queued up to greet her, Karin spotted Jesus among them and immediately felt something was wrong. Concerned about the implications of being honored at the same level as Jesus, she expressed her fear of damnation. The angelic being laughed, assuring her there is no hell and that all are equal in spirit form. Recognizing that Karin was still "veiled," the being made a gesture that removed this veil, instantly transporting Karin to what she calls the "sea of light." In this realm, as she stretched out her arms, her body exploded beyond physical form - she had no beginning or end, becoming truly one with all creation, seeing herself as purple and gold light among countless others. The experience fundamentally challenged Karin's religious beliefs. Raised in both Catholic and Protestant traditions with parents who believed in the supernatural, she had always believed in heaven, hell, and the devil. This experience showed her that God is not a "super-sized parent" but unconditional love itself, and that she is not separate from but part of the divine. She learned that all beings are connected, equal parts of the loving spirit called God, with the divine spark living within everyone forever. When told she had to return due to unfinished business, Karin desperately begged to stay. The being compressed her into a golden egg and placed it on her physical body's chest, where it sank in. She heard someone mention her breathing before awakening to her family visiting her hospital room. Now at age 60, Karin understands why she had to return. The experience eliminated her fear of death, transformed her understanding of the divine from an external judge to an internal presence, and convinced her that religion often promotes division rather than the unity she experienced.
