Samson J experienced a Code Blue the morning after kidney removal surgery in November 1998. Due to Von Willebrand's Disease, a bleeding disorder, he required five units of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) to prevent bleeding. Mix-ups with paperwork delayed the FFP administration until surgery morning, and post-operatively the FFP was pushed too quickly along with antibiotics and other fluids. This fluid overload forced excess fluid into his lungs and heart area, resulting in both respiratory arrest and congestive heart failure. His mother witnessed him saying "My lungs are gurgling!" before alarms went off and Code Blue was announced.
During the cardiac arrest, Samson left his body and initially experienced complete auditory chaos with shouting, commands, and alarms. He became aware of a very bright light in the upper left corner of the room and felt drawn toward it. He entered what appeared to be a tunnel of the brightest white light he had ever seen. Inside the tunnel, he experienced an indescribable sense of warmth, love, and peace that intensified the deeper he went. As he approached the end of the tunnel, he could see people waiting to greet him, including his mother-in-law who had died seven months previously. His forward progress then stopped and he began moving slowly backward. Samson heard and remembered specific medical orders during resuscitation. When he related the experience to his doctor a week later, the physician initially dismissed it as hallucination until Samson began repeating the exact orders given to nurses, particularly one where the doctor told them to stop moving the rails because Samson's arm was caught and would break if they continued. This specific detail convinced the doctor of the experience's reality. Samson's next memory was awakening in the ICU several days later, intubated with wrists secured to the rails after apparently trying to pull out his breathing tube earlier. He experienced no change in his religious faith (remaining Mormon) but gained certainty about the afterlife.
