Duane was rafting with his daughters and neighborhood children when he fell from the raft and was caught in an undertow. Unable to reach the surface despite fighting with all his strength, he drowned after being underwater for approximately 6+ minutes. After accepting death, he suddenly found himself standing several feet above the water as if lifted by his father. All his senses were heightened - colors brighter, sight crisper, with 360-degree vision. He could feel the sun's warmth, the breeze through tree leaves as if they were his fingers, and felt a bird's joy at existing. A voice asked "what do you want to do?" He surveyed the scene: his youngest daughter climbing from the water, his eldest walking along the bank trying to guide rescuers to his body. He was suddenly thrown inside his eldest daughter, seeing through her eyes and understanding her calm, logical thoughts about saving her father. Returned to his position above the water, he felt God's love emanating from behind him, like being rocked in a mother's arms. Given the choice between this existence with his heavenly Father or returning to raise his daughters, he chose to return. Told "you have to give all you've got," he made a conscious choice to be in his body, gained locomotive strength to reach the surface, and was rescued by boys in a raft.
