JJHG was under epidural anesthesia during surgery when he experienced nausea followed by everything becoming dark. He could hear the pulse oximeter slowing down and becoming more distant. He sank into deep relaxation with intense well-being, peace and tranquility. Everything went absolutely black with no lights, stairs, or voices. He felt ready and wanted to die peacefully. Then he went into respiratory arrest, which the surgical team attributed to a vasovagal attack. They revived him and he woke suddenly, happy and peaceful. He now believes there is no afterlife and death is simply a pleasant shutting off of consciousness.
