Richard was in an emergency room on March 19, 2014, with a heart rate of 180 beats per minute. Medical staff attempted chemical cardioversion twice unsuccessfully, then administered drugs to sedate him for electrical cardioversion. Despite requiring unusually high doses due to his natural resistance to anesthetic drugs, he was eventually sedated. During the electrical cardioversion procedure, his heart stopped beating for one minute and eleven seconds.
During this time, Richard found himself on a path with a hard-packed dirt floor inside what appeared to be a cave or tunnel. The structure had varying shaped openings in the left wall through which he could see a desert landscape with an intense pinkish hue. The area was devoid of human or animal life but contained some plant life. The right wall appeared like a typical cave wall, and the roof had structures reminiscent of a trellis or mineshaft supports. Ahead on the path were two equal groups of people dressed identically who appeared to be female. Richard struggled to reach these groups, feeling like he was making no progress despite them appearing only thirty yards away. When he finally arrived, the groups were engaged in a debate about whether he was "a traitor" with one group making this claim while the other asked for an exception. He was astonished to find consciousness after death and asked "who are you people?" in disbelief. Before receiving an answer, he suddenly awakened back in the emergency trauma room. Richard was hospitalized for several days and suffered a stroke one week after discharge. The experience left him confused about the afterlife, particularly troubled by the accusation of being a traitor when he had spent his life helping others. He remains uncertain about the reality of the experience.
