Richard was driving his mother to work in Los Angeles on January 31, 1983, when he exited the freeway and was struck by a vehicle traveling 80 miles per hour. He was killed instantly upon impact. He felt his body being crushed and saw his mother thrown into the dashboard as a light appeared. The car traveled approximately 300 yards from the initial impact while following this light.
Richard experienced going to hell first, describing the pain as being like a comet in space with the tail being eternal screams. He then found himself in heaven, a place he describes as beyond words. He asked to see God and encountered a Middle Eastern man with black hair and beard who appeared as a close friend. Richard wore golden-bordered clothes and carried a sword during this encounter. God's appearance incorporated all races, and Richard recognized this being as all-powerful. They looked together toward Earth, which appeared as a darkened pit below. Richard noticed God's garments had diamond trim that was not man-made. When Richard opened his eyes, he was back in the car with his mother screaming "He is alive!" His mother later reported hearing God speaking "lo I will always be with you" and seeing Jesus Christ's face superimposed on Richard's face. Paramedics arrived and stood Richard up despite the severe accident. After the experience, Richard could see the world differently, perceiving sin and spiritual realities. He walked out of the hospital two hours later without breaking a single bone despite the fatal impact. Later, when seeing a cross on a church, he recognized the man he had met was Jesus Christ. Police and hospital records document this remarkable case.
