Harris was stung by a wasp while jogging and experienced severe anaphylaxis. After calling his wife and attempting to use his epi-pen, he passed out despite an initial epinephrine shot. The rescue squad arrived with more epinephrine but couldn't revive him with oxygen and monitoring. During this time, Harris had an out-of-body experience, hovering above and observing resuscitation attempts. He heard paramedics discussing that they couldn't get a pulse and their radio communications with the hospital. It was dark above, very calm and peaceful with no fear of dying. While realizing he was dying, he humorously thought "I can't believe I'm gonna die from a bee sting." Sensing but not seeing a presence, he had a one-sided conversation saying "I know that this is your call, but I'm not ready, with this young wife and family and I'm going to fight this." Complete silence followed, then a loud "WHOOSH" with quick downward thrust as he re-entered his body. He waved away the paramedic about to perform a tracheotomy and was rushed to the ER requiring several more epinephrine shots. His doctor was astonished at the medical error given his 10-day illness. The experience left Harris with stronger belief in a supreme being and afterlife, less fear about death, and greater awareness of life's importance and uncertainty. He openly shares his experience, which still gives him goosebumps.
