Graeme suffered from normally well-controlled asthma that was exacerbated by a sinus and lung infection, leading to severe uncontrollable coughing fits. During one coughing episode while watching TV alone, he experienced such a severe attack that he stopped breathing. In this state, Graeme sensed the sweet perfume of incense and found himself looking into a brightly lit, white-walled corridor or tunnel. He felt very calm and not at all afraid during the experience, which lasted only a few seconds. The experience featured an intense white light and complete silence, with feelings of peace, tranquility, and happiness. Graeme saw but did not enter the tunnel/corridor, as the event ended before he faced any decision about entering it. Upon returning, he found the experience pleasant yet perturbing, making him reconsider his skeptical views about religion and the afterlife. Though remaining somewhat skeptical, the vivid nature of the experience gave him pause about the existence of an afterlife.
