Glen was having throat surgery in October 2002 to remove a golf ball-sized polyp when he went into anaphylactic shock. One lung collapsed and the doctor screamed at him to breathe. He realized he was dying and had taken his last breath. He was consumed by extreme peacefulness and serenity, feeling safer than ever before. He experienced the beginning of a life review.
Glen found himself standing above the room viewing from the upper-left corner as medical teams worked on his lifeless body. He saw the flatlined heart monitor and watched them prepare the defibrillator. Despite being 46 and not seeing well without glasses, he could read the name badges of two cardiac nurses who entered - "Landers" and "McCarthy" - from his elevated vantage point. After 4.5 minutes of being clinically dead, they restored his heartbeat. At the OR door, Glen experienced overwhelming peace and love. His deceased mother Phyllis, who died exactly one year prior (10/27/2001), appeared smiling with hand outstretched. When his body was wheeled toward ICU doors that revealed blinding white light, he desperately tried to follow but was stuck to something. His last memory was his right foot pulling loose. He woke six days later after being in a coma on life support. The duty roster confirmed nurses Landers and McCarthy were the cardiac team, and one visited to confirm he was unconscious throughout. Without his glasses, he couldn't have read their badges normally.
