Frédéric experienced severe chest pain and respiratory distress in 2009, initially misdiagnosed as gastric flu. His condition worsened until he had only 5% lung capacity. An ultrasound revealed a large water pouch compressing his heart. During emergency pericardium surgery, the pouch burst causing 22 cardiac arrests within 24 hours. He was placed in a coma for four days.

He visited his family at home through the roots of a tomato plant, seeing them searching for a key. He also witnessed his mother confronting his doctor at his practice. A council of deceased family members showed him his past life and two potential futures - one without him where his children suffered, and one where he returned to become an independent craftsman. This convinced him to return despite wanting to stay in the peaceful light. The veridical details about the key location and his mother's confrontation with the doctor were later confirmed.
