At age 9, Rhonda was sexually assaulted and suffocated by an intruder who entered through an open door while her family slept. During the attack, she was suffocated to the point of death. She had a brief out-of-body experience where she saw her exposed body and attacker. She then floated in a peaceful dark void and slowly tunneled toward a bright light. A voice forcefully but gently told her to scream. She gained breath, screamed, and the attacker fled, leaving his wallet. Her father chased him but the man escaped. Rhonda suffered severe trauma, became suicidal, nearly failed fifth grade, and spent three years in therapy. The experience haunted her for 25 years through recurring dreams. She experienced the NDE as a distressing event due to its violent nature, though the void itself was peaceful. She developed lasting psychological effects including PTSD, anxiety, and ritualistic behaviors. However, she also gained spiritual insights, lost her fear of death, and developed heightened empathy and the ability to have out-of-body experiences at will.
