At age 16, Petra experienced a severe E. coli infection that led to cardiac arrest in a hospital emergency room. She had been ill with high fever, headache, and nausea before being taken to the hospital. While in the observation room, she lost her sight and hearing but remained conscious, then fainted. During her cardiac arrest, she found herself floating in an infinite white bright light that was not blinding. She felt absolute peace, wrapped in pleasant warmth, with no pain or distress. She experienced a sensation of weightlessness and being attracted by something from behind, like floating on a slow-moving river. When she heard her father's desperate shout "NO-O-O!!!! DOCTOR!!!" she understood that if she let herself go with the current, she would not return to her family, so she consciously stopped herself. She woke up in the hospital bed with the doctor and nurses working desperately to stabilize her. She was later transferred to a larger hospital where she recovered without any lasting consequences.
