Francesca was a passenger on a motorcycle that collided with two racing motorcycles. Her fiancé gave her his helmet and asked her to drive to watch the next race. As she turned to listen to him speak, she saw bright lights before impact. She then found herself observing from above, not at ground level, seeing herself surrounded by people, emergency vehicles, and lights extending for what seemed like a mile. She briefly awoke being loaded into the ambulance, seeing the flashing lights before losing consciousness again. She experienced profound calm while observing the scene from above, feeling no emotions about the emergency activity below. She didn't remember the experience until two months later, waking at 3am nightly after foot surgery. Her fiancé died in the accident. At his wake, she recognized a woman by smell as the person who gave her CPR, though she hadn't seen her face during CPR. She later became Buddhist and found meaning in the experience.
