A 35-year-old diving instructor experienced a near-death event during a diving certification exam in 1985 at Cap de Creus, Spain. The exam was conducted at 35 meters depth, but due to poor conditions with alternating clear and murky water layers, the group descended incorrectly to 62-64 meters. While attempting to help inflate a life vest for an unconscious female diver at this extreme depth, he suffered anoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain) and lost consciousness. Two young divers died in this incident, their bodies recovered 24-48 hours later, both from apparent heart attacks without water in their lungs.
During his unconscious state, he felt himself losing control of his sphincters and heard a sound like "beep, beep, beep, b-e-e-e-e-p" similar to hospital equipment. He found himself in what he described as a tunnel like the eye of a hurricane, with everything in black and white. Above and in the distance was a brilliant white light shaped like a partially open door toward which he was headed. He had no body and wasn't in the water, experiencing a very calm, pleasant sense of peace and well-being that he compared to immense pleasure beyond words. He heard a voice in Catalan, his native language, that said emphatically: "Paulo, they are in the water, open your mouth and go up!!!" The voice was friendly, sweet, firm but imperious. Despite not feeling he was in water or had a mouth or body, he felt strong heat and then heard someone calling him. He opened his eyes to see blue sky and found himself at the surface about 100 meters from the boat. He believes he survived because he had partially inflated his vest while descending slowly, and the expanding air during his uncontrolled ascent forced open his glottis, allowing air to escape and preventing lung damage. Witnesses saw his body emerge from the water "like a rocket" with arms making what appeared to be help signals. The experience left him believing it wasn't his time and that he had been sent to that location to witness the two deaths that occurred.
