A woman underwent thyroid removal surgery in September 1994 when she went into cardiac arrest, as the surgeon later informed her. During this medical crisis, she experienced a profound near-death experience that would leave lasting impressions despite initial doubts about its divine nature.
She found herself on a path leading upward into the sky, which seemed marvelous to her. Two golden angels in cherub style kept watch on each side of the path. They opened a large gate before her, smiling as she passed through. The emotion she felt was overwhelming - utter joy and a sense of total success at being able to enter this magical place. Behind the gate was a huge space with a graceful tree in the middle, made of silver with spreading branches. She was deeply moved to arrive at this place. The experience was characterized by intense positive emotions and beautiful imagery. The angels were golden and childlike, the tree was silver, and the entire scene was bathed in magical colors that made earthly colors seem poor and denuded in comparison. She felt wonderful, safe, warm, and comfortable in this realm. The feelings of joy and success at entering this place were beyond anything she had experienced on Earth. Reality pulled her back when she heard her mother calling her name. Returning was very difficult, and she had problems readjusting to the world, which seemed grey and heavy compared to paradise. The readjustment took a long time, as she felt she had returned from paradise. A doctor later explained she had experienced an NDE, which helped her process the event. Though her religious beliefs didn't immediately change, a second near-death experience in 2013 involving a supernatural being finally convinced her that God truly exists as described in the Bible.
