A young man experiencing deep despair after a breakup and the loss of three brothers decided to end his life in 1990. On a dark, rainy day, he took drugs and drank whiskey, then intentionally stopped breathing while lying on a back porch. He experienced no reflex to breathe and sank deeper into unconsciousness. His girlfriend found him blue and unconscious, later reporting he had been clinically dead for approximately two minutes before she revived him.
During his unconscious state, he found himself watching the rain hit the ground in slow motion, with time to observe each individual drop despite it raining harder. Everything then went white like a bright mist. As the mist cleared while he moved forward without walking sensation, he saw a boundary line he knew he wasn't supposed to cross. Beyond it stood a large, plain building with an arch opening at its base. People were coming through the mist and passing through the opening as if normal. He observed himself floating slightly above the people surrounding him, about 50 centimeters higher. They looked at him with the softest smiles but didn't look at the light that attracted him like looking at the sun without being dazzled. A woman in her 50s approached, put her hand on his shoulder, and said "You know you're not supposed to be here, aye?" He understood he wouldn't get any further. The beings showed him through their smiles that he should "take" a giant hand that appeared to rip open the tunnel, accompanied by the message "you don't have the right to leave us now." He woke to his girlfriend dragging him across the floor screaming "wake up!" He vomited and began breathing again. She confirmed he was blue when she found him. The experience left him confused rather than peaceful, though years later he wrote about knowing his last life ended badly, like being on the wrong side of a war, and having memories of coming into this life through OBE immediately after his twin sister was born.
