A 6-week-old infant girl in November 1956 contracted severe flu from her mother, becoming critically ill with high fever, dark circles under sunken eyes, and severe dehydration. Her father found her listless and immediately had her 9-year-old sister hold her while he drove to the hospital. Emergency doctors later stated it was a miracle she survived, having arrived just in time. This remarkably became a conscious memory despite her infant age.
During the car ride, the baby observed moving lights above her that fascinated her, making her sleepy. She saw the chin of who she thought was her mother wearing a white babushka with black polka dots tied under the chin. In a remarkable shift of consciousness, she experienced a "whoosh" sensation and found herself floating at the car ceiling behind her father's head. She had no visible body but could see everything - the bright dashboard lights, her "mother" in the passenger seat, and through the car seats to see a bundle (herself) on the lap. Most extraordinarily, she could feel everyone's emotions - her father's tremendous fear that he was fighting to maintain control while driving, and from who she thought was her mother, much less fear with focus mainly on not upsetting the father. She understood far more than any 6-week-old infant normally could. When her sister said something anxiously and her father turned the wheel right to lean over and check the bundle, she felt another "whoosh" and returned to her body, feeling heavy, weak, and hot. She saw her father's upside-down face above hers with wide eyes. The memory remained vivid throughout her life. In the late 1970s, her older sister confirmed the entire event, including the exact babushka description, though she dismissed the baby's ability to remember it. Her sister revealed that during the drive she felt the baby had died, saying "Dad!! I think she's GONE!!" prompting their father to pull over and check, finding her still alive. The experience left her with heightened empathic abilities, photographic memory, and the absolute certainty that consciousness exists beyond the physical body. She believes she was meant to remember this to understand death's reality.
