A 9-year-old boy fell from a tree onto his back in May 1959, causing him to stop breathing and unable to get air into his lungs. He was in great pain, felt very cold, and passed out. The fall was severe enough to leave his right arm feeling dead and required significant recovery time afterward.
During his unconscious state, he saw a light and began walking toward it, becoming aware he was in what felt like a very large tunnel moving up an incline. At an undetermined point within the tunnel, he stopped when a voice that was neither male nor female, sounding soft and kind, spoke to him telepathically: "Hello Nigel don't be afraid you have had an accident, it is not your time, you have to go back." The voice knew him by name and addressed him directly. He protested, saying he didn't want to return because it hurt too much and he wanted to stay where he was. They were almost involved in an argument about it. The voice told him he had no choice in the matter and was going back as he had "things to do." He felt the voice had an authority that made him take notice and accept what it said, even though he felt he knew the voice and it didn't alarm him. The communication seemed to be in language appropriate for a nine-year-old boy. He experienced feelings of calm, comfort, well-being, alertness, and total peace. He felt part of everything that existed while being without form, experiencing incredible peace and joy with a sense of harmony and unity with the universe. He came to in great pain as he started taking small breaths, then breathing normally. It felt like his lungs popped open. He walked up to the house, told his mother he fell out of a tree and was alright, went upstairs to clean up, had his tea, and never said a word to her about the experience. He didn't share it with anyone until he was over fifty years old. The experience left him knowing that life after death exists and feeling sad for those who cannot know that "it will all be okay when they leave here."
