Catherine underwent experimental scoliosis surgery at age 11 in 1971, involving halo femoral traction with screws in her head and pins in her legs. During the operation, she heard doctors saying she wasn't responding and felt their panic. She found herself walking under a huge wave with rainbow colors she'd never seen before, feeling immense joy and no pain. An elderly woman ahead of her turned around - she looked exactly like Catherine but older, age 84. The woman told Catherine she couldn't come there yet, had to live in her painful body which wouldn't always hurt, and had many things to do helping people find their gifts before she could die at 84. Catherine saw doctors operating on her in a room with observation glass, hearing their thoughts including one doctor thinking the operation was bogus and they were using people as guinea pigs. She heard negative thoughts and didn't want to be a guinea pig. Upon returning, she told her mother about the experience immediately, including the guinea pig comment which puzzled her mother. The experience gave Catherine a lifelong understanding that everyone has gifts and her purpose is to help people find them. She continues to feel the presence of the beings she encountered and believes we are all connected as one.
