Thirteen-year-old Mona Lisa underwent major spinal surgery for scoliosis in 1981. Terrified before surgery and convinced she would die, she became hysterical and was sedated. Once in the operating room, she counted backward from 100 three times before losing consciousness. During surgery, she floated above her body watching medical staff frantically working on her opened back, hearing repeatedly "We're losing her!" and the flatline beep indicating cardiac arrest. From the ceiling, she observed the exit sign and water sprinkler. She then visited her mother crying alone in a waiting room and sister praying in her bedroom at home. A quick life review showed her best moments. Rising through the night sky above Earth, she entered a beautiful autumn forest and encountered a bright sun radiating love and acceptance. Walking with a being who instructed her not to look left, she was told the second surgery would go fine and she would become an adult. After being slapped awake by the nurse who had fought to save her, she learned her heart had stopped for approximately three minutes. The nurse who saved her turned pale when thanked, and the hospital initially hid the cardiac arrest from her mother.
